Welding can and often does involve the melting of metal at extreme high temperatures of 2000 degrees F. There are many form of welding today that are a specialized way to either fuse or adjoin pieces of metal.Stick welding, the most common type of welding, requires skilled and knowledgeable individuals that have the ability to properly weld metal together with a specially designed process, in welding shops or on large commercial projects, at heights well above city streets. Therefore, although not mandatory at this time, a majority of employers are requiring their employees to wear protective breathing apparatus to filter out these hazardous fumes.It is expected that this will be a common practice, required by OSHA, throughout the welding industry within two years.
Welding is more than a craft, welding is a skill. Individuals currently employed in this field have undergone extensive training either at a technical school or have been instructed by qualified individuals with many years of experience in the welding industry. With the hazardous environment that welding presents, the possibility of severe injury or burns is commonplace. All individuals must be properly equipped with the latest in welding apparel and instructed on the proper use and care to avoid such hazards. With extreme temperatures of molten metal in combination with the high voltage of welding machines, a novice welder can become permanently maimed for life without the proper supervision and training.
