1. Vegetable tanned leather apparel is a basic for of tanning utilized in various types of animal hides. This is a process that uses various types of vegetable matter to develop brown and supple types of material. The chemicals and vegetable matter used will dictate a more precise coloration. This was once used to make armor because it is so durable and can be made rock hard in processing.
2. Chrome tanning is a common practice for a beautiful type of tannin process. This has a like blue coloration by nature because of the chromium used in the chemical processing of this material. Extremely popular for those who like to stamp or carve. Very pliable and supple.
3. Aldehyde tanning uses the chemical oxazolidine or glutaraldehyde to get a pale cream or white material suitable for many purposes. This is even popular in infant’s clothing simply because of the softness. The formaldehyde tanning process is similar but is being slowly phased out due to the dangerous fumes and properties.
4. Synthetic tanning uses aromatic polymers to get that perfect look and feel. This is a white material once used as an alternative to vegetable tannin. During World War II, this synthetic tanning process was used heavily since the chemical used were in such large supply. This is a popular method still today and a lot less hazardous to people or the environment.
5. Rawhide is a basic process used in the development of many useful tools. Rawhide is much stiffer and more rigid than other types of leather apparel, and therefore, is not used commonplace. Rawhide can be used to create laces, strings, dog chew toys, and other versatile tools, but is generally not used in the creation of clothing or boots. Rawhide is not extremely flexible.
6. Alum tanning is a process using aluminum salts in developing leather apparel. However, many people claim this is not tanning as much as tawing since the material is not as durable or water resistant. Not as supple as many of the other popular methods today.
7. Oiling is a process by which this material can be made more water resistance. In addition, this is a process which will further the life of the leather apparel giving it more of a flexible finish needed for work wear.
When you need more from your working garments, this is a great material for your outerwear, boots, and even more. Shoes and other types of footwear commonly utilize this supple and comfortable material because it offers more protection at a reasonable cost.
