Working on an oil rig is a tough and dangerous business and the right oilfield apparel is absolutely necessary for the men and women to get the job done. There are many specialty items such as face masks, suspenders and the right cap for summer or winter but the main clothing is coveralls and bib overalls including body warmers and helmet liners. Shirts, jackets, socks, boots and gloves all need to be right to make the worker safe and comfortable. They all come insulated for freezing temperatures on the rigs or unlined. Socks come in ankle, crew and over the calf.
Flame resistant (FR) oilfield apparel is also a necessity. It should comply with the National Fire Protection Agency (NFPA) guidelines. The material must be guaranteed to be flame resistant for the life of the garment. Overalls, jackets, shirts, Jeans, pants, coveralls and hoods are a few of the flame resistant clothing available. These garments should be cleaned according to the instructions that come with them. Usually, 100% cotton flame resistant fabric can be dry cleaned if all the dry cleaning solvent is removed from the garment. Also, home detergents can be used except those containing chlorine, peroxide or enzyme bleach. If the flame resistant oilfield apparel has become contaminated with a flammable substance it should be cleaned thoroughly before using again or discarded. Bandanas also come in flame resistant fabric to be worn under hardhats.
Disposable tyvek oilfield apparel is also worn, usually as coveralls, to repel chemicals, acids and dirt. It breathes like cotton but keeps out moisture, and is very light weight and durable. High visibility safety apparel is also important. There are 100% polyester vests in fluorescent yellow or orange and they include reflective silver strips. There are also fleece jackets with hoods that are cotton polyester blends and are bright colors with reflective tape. Hats and gloves come in the same safety material. You can also get pants, coveralls and bib overalls that have reflective safety strips around the legs, arms and chest. FR clothing also comes in the high visibility fabrics.
Camouflage is a popular pattern for oilfield apparel. It was designed to give workers on oil rigs or platforms a sense of ownership. They are worn at every level of oil production from the rig to the corporate office. There is clothing especially made for oil workers including jackets and coveralls, pants and shirts as well as bags, hats and accessories. These garments are popular because they look good on or off the job.
There are a variety of boots for oilfield apparel including lace up ankle work boots and pull on work boots both with steel toes. They also come with plain toe as well as water and chemical resistance. Gloves come in cotton canvas in white and high visibility green and orange as well as leather, rubber and PVC coated with leather palms. Last but not least, safety goggles, ear protectors and
