Camo caps are hats made in combat camouflage print. These caps were originally designed to help combat troops hide from the enemy effectively during jungle warfare; hence the traditional khaki green and brown print colour. However, since the 1950s, these caps have become a popular and stylish choice of cap for civilians, especially in times of war. Recent fashion trends have shown that this type of cap has experienced a resurgence in popularity as the public desires to put their patriotism and support for troops fighting overseas on display through their choice of headwear.
These caps come in three distinct styles: the boonie cap, similar in style to the bucket cap, but has a much stiffer brim, the field cap – a flat top cap with a rounded visor brim and a regular style baseball cap. The camo caps used by the military are boonie caps and field caps; the appearance of camouflage prints on baseball caps has been used as a way of popularising the military style print amongst civilians. The boonie cap became a part of military uniforms during the Vietnam War, as it provided greater protection from the sun and the foliage ring sewn around the crown of the cap (used to secure extra leaves and branches) was more useful in concealing the troops from enemy attack. Alternatively, the field cap is used by troops when a combat helmet is not needed.
As with other types of caps, camo caps produced for civilian use are made from durable cotton fabric blends. Official military grade caps are made using more technologically advanced fabrics – cotton, waxed cotton, nylon and polyester blends to ensure that they are hard wearing in tropical, monsoonal, extreme heat and extreme cold conditions. When looking into a cap for general civilian use, it is best to purchase a 100% cotton cap as this is the most breathable and durable fabric for everyday wear. Unlike blended fabrics, 100% cotton is safe to hand wash and machine wash; as long as the cap is placed on a gentle cold water spin cycle and a soft detergent is used.
These styles of cap come in a variety of different combat print colours, designed to mimic the actual prints used by the military. The most popular colours for camo caps are khaki green and brown, desert tan and navy blue. Although the militaristic colours and style of these caps seem to target male consumers, the caps are considered unisex and some companies have even started producing a camo pink patterned cap to specifically target female consumers.
You also have the option of customising these caps with your own embroidered or screen printed logo, catchphrase or insignia. However, it is important to consider the eye-catching nature of the print on the caps when thinking about customising them. Unless your insignia or logo is particularly bold and stands out well against the print of the cap, it can get lost and become difficult to see. To avoid disappointment, it is best to consult a supplier or manufacturer of camo caps to ensure the best result possible.
