If you have every wondered what the standard apparel definition is, you may be surprised to find that there have been four accepted understandings throughout the course of history.Though they are all somewhat related they are still very different in the ways they are used. The first definition is easily the most identifiable.“Clothing” or more particularly “outer garments,” is how we categorize the term today.Looking into the history of the term, though, you will find the three other characterizations are slightly different, and somewhat figurative in some cases. However, comparing them all, there are definitely similarities.
The second apparel definition is “a cover” or something to that effect. You might assume that this relates to clothing, but it can also relate to the draping of fabric over objects.Traditional clothing was typically not much more than this anyway. Our chattel needs protecting from environmental conditions the same way our body does. You could even go so far as to classify it as a blanket that keeps a human or an animal warm.Of course, in ancient times when these words were being developed, domestic pets were not very common. However, the way we coddle them today would be similar to the way they were cherished and cared for as livestock.
A third, more figurative apparel definition exists, as well.“Adornment” has also classically been used as an alternative for the term.If you look at clothing as a traditionally functional item, and not as the fashionable accoutrements we are accustomed to today, this iteration of the term might make more sense. It can be used to describe both clothing as an accessory to the body itself, or something you might add to an outfit to make it more aesthetically pleasing.
Finally, there is also a nautical apparel definition. This is obviously a classical reference to a time long ago, before our modern understanding of clothing and travel came about. This categorization qualifies a vessel’s gear or equipment that it might need to properly embark on a voyage. It could definitely be argued that this is similar to both the earlier explanations of “cover” and “adornment” that categorize clothing in the modern world.Though it is somewhat of a stretch by today’s vernacular, it is worthy of mention because of its roots in the language and in our culture.
It doesn’t matter which apparel definition you choose, each version is still relatively valid by today’s standards, depending on how you use the word.Whatever your cover, clothing, or adornment needs are, you can likely find the best variety and prices at an online retailer.Small, independent companies take their business online in hopes of reducing overhead and creating more opportunities to develop strong relationships with new clients. You can be one of those clients by doing business with them. They will often specialize in custom orders and unique merchandise.Sometimes financing and free shipping incentives can really sweeten the deal too, so ask lots of questions and investigate your options thoroughly to make sure you are getting the most for your money.
