Hard hat ratchet, hard hat ratchet protection

A ratchet is a mechanism that allows movement of the hard hat in one direction though a pawl that engages the sliding of teeth. This stylish full-brim hard hat features numerous advantages over traditional hard hats. Its brim extends wide over the neck and ears, helping to reduce the amount of harmful UV radiation from the sun. Additionally, the brim is slightly shorter in the front, allowing the wearer to be able to look upward. The hard hat ratchet also features a ratchet suspension for quick and easy adjustment.

MSA Safety Works Hard Hats meet all applicable requirements of the American National Standards Institute ANSI Z89.1-2003. Type I, Classes E (Electrical) and G (General). All hard hats ratchet suspension are of made of HDPE (high density Polypropylene). MSA Skull guard caps are made of Phenolic Resin which is highly heat resistant. Bump caps are made of low density Polypropylene. Bump caps are not ANSI approved head protection. It is very unlikely that’s hard hats will ever be made of fiberglass. It is used construction work, trimming tree branches and overhead electrical hazards to avoid hazards as overhead falling objects, electrical shock and UV Radiation.

Hard hats should not be worn backwards unless they include a swing ratchet suspension. These are sold separately. Currently we only carry this suspension option for MSA and Fibred-Metal hard hats. Usually it is a matter of preference, since cost is a factor. Ratchet-style suspensions include a knob which is turned to adjust the hat to the desired head size/comfort level. All other suspensions require the user to adjust prior to donning.

Workers tend to believe that just because they have hard hat with ratchet on their head, they already are protected. Many times, employees do not understand that hard hats must be fitted like any other piece of PPE as ratchets, and will walk around with a cap wobbling around on their head. Or, they think that not wearing a hard hat for a couple of hours won’t bring any consequence. Unfortunately, many of the head injuries have occurred during these types of situations.

Safety hard hats are one of the most common pieces of personal protective equipment, but sometimes they are taken for granted. Many people don't realize that safety hats, both the shell and suspension, need to be inspected not only during assembly, but also before each use. The user should visually inspect the hat for signs of dents, cracks, penetration or other damage due to impact, rough treatment or unauthorized alterations which may reduce the degree of the safety originally provided. Employer's policy or recommendation from standards may be different, but under normal use, field tests have shown that generally, shells have a life of at least 3 years from the time of issue and that suspensions may deteriorate more rapidly in service. For hard hats that are used infrequently and stored away from sunlight, dirt and temperature extremes, this guideline may not be applicable. Conversely, hats that are used in an aggressive environment, extremes conditions or poorly stored may need to be replaced more frequently.
