7 Steps to Laundering Embroidered Fabric
Caring for your garments is a vital necessity, and when you add into the equation embroidered fabric, the proper laundering is extremely important to negate puckering and other effects that can be detrimental to your garments. Laundering can be as easy as cleaning at home, or you can choose to take your garments to a professional dry cleaner. However, even the professional dry cleaner must take precautions when it comes to embroidery on any type of material whether it is silk, cotton, canvas, polyester, or any other types of popular materials utilized today.
1. Avoid those prep-spotting chemicals which include sprays, sticks, and other such agents. These can be harsh on your embroidery and patches. If you have a stain, try brushing lightly with a soft toothbrush and warm water directly before the laundering cycle.
2. Do not presoak the garment. This can degrade the integrity of the fabric as well as the thread. Instead of presoaking, wash your laundry as soon as you get home rather than allow stains and spots time to set permanently.
3. Wash in cold water, and always use the delicate cycle. The agitation of your washing machine can be dangerous to your garments and the embroidered fabric. The delicate cycle is, indeed, generally enough to launder most garments.
4. Use a mild detergent and never use a bleaching agent. Discoloration is a major key to the downfall of many a good garment. Even those color-safe bleaches can prove detrimental to your special garments.
5. The embroidered fabric should be ironed inside out with the iron never touching the area directly. This can also be accomplished with a cotton cloth or towel placed between the hot iron and your garment. This will insure the integrity of the garment and reduce discoloration or burns.
6. If colors happen to bleed, and you are stuck with embroidery that has streaks of color, you can rinse in lukewarm water then change to cold water. When the rinse water comes out clear, you can be assured you have removed the colors and will reduce bleeding of the embroidery as well.
7. Of importance is the fact that if you do wash the embroidery by hand that you do not try wringing out the embroidery. This will twist the threads and hurt the integrity of your embroidery area.
Embroidery is a beautiful concept and can be wonderful addition to your work wear. Knowing how to launder your garments is an important part of owning beautiful embroidery. Of important note is the fact that the garment label does not cover the special customization or personalization. The manufacturers label covers the garment itself, and if you have customization, you should be sure that you know how to launder the garment with new instructions.
Embroidered fabric needs special care. Using care is going to insure the threads old tight, and that the colors do not bleed. This will save you considerable money since you will not have to replace the garment sooner than expected.
