Embroidered Clothing & the Laundry
Doing the laundry is rarely anyone’s idea of a “good” time. But it is something that is a necessity. Having cleans clothes is important, and generally, clean linens and towels are nice too. There are many tips and ideas on how to get the best cleaning for your clothes. However, if you happen to have embroidered clothing, you will find laundry day may have a few tricky steps that need to have special care taken to insure the best process.
A basic load of laundry includes water, detergent, and dirty fabrics. This is pretty much the basic necessities for cleaning laundry. However, this does not mean that all laundry handles those three steps the same.
Embroidered clothing is special. While the fabric itself can be tough like denim or corduroy, the embroidery itself is delicate. The fine thread and beads may mean you cannot wash those jeans like they are denim. Instead, you have to insure you take special steps to insure the safety of the customized design.
Many times something will spill or splash onto the design itself. You should blot the threading with a white cloth to try and remove the spot. Never scrub, twist, or brush the threading. This will weaken the threading and usually spread the spot around more embedding it into the fabric. Generally, this will mean a ruined piece of embroidered clothing.
To remove spots on threading, you can spray with stain remover spray if you have tested the threading to insure it will not stain the fabric or thread. Once it the spray is in place, wait for 5-10 minutes before lightly blotting with a clean, white cloth. Repeat as needed to remove the stain.
Many people will choose cover the customization before laundering. This means using clear tape and a clean white cloth. Tape the cloth to the outside of the design. This will insure you maximum protection for the embroidery. Once laundered, simply remove the tape and viola, you have a clean garment that looks better than ever.
Another important part of the laundering process means you need to insure your machine is clean. Any machine needs cleaned from time to time, and the easiest way to clean a washing machine is to wash an empty, full cycle with nothing but water and 1 cup of white vinegar. If the machine is exceptionally dirty, you will be able to allow the full water load with vinegar to sit at maximum capacity for up to an hour before continuing the cleaning process.
When you are finished with the washing cycle, you should hang the garment up to try where it will not stretch. Do not use the dryer. If you cannot hang the garment, lay flat on a flat surface sandwiched between two, clean clothes.
Laundering that embroidered clothing is easier than ever. You will find that if things get tough, you can simply contact a local dry cleaners or laundering service to see if they can offer assistance. When it comes to laundry and your delicates, sometimes the simplest things are best. Other times, it is time to call in the professionals.
